After a smash hit, sold out season in 2023, Extra Curricular – a comedy cabaret by teachers for teachers – is returning to Adelaide Fringe 2024.
Adelaide Fringe stalwarts Libby Trainor Parker and Matthew Trainor used to be very sensible high school teachers before they started writing funny songs to sing in hot tents and their latest offering Extra Curricular is a product of this silliness.
Matt is a Legal Studies teacher, Libby is a Drama teacher and between them, they have four decades of experience with marking, planning, yard duties, sports days and staff meetings bringing with it plenty of comedy fodder.
Following the success of their award-winning show Endo Days about the couple’s experience with Libby’s endometriosis, the pair decided to make fun of a new topic: their illustrious careers in education; and it paid off.
Selling out The Lark at Gluttony and scoring five-star reviews, Libby and Matt are doing the show again, but this time they’re taking it to their own Fringe venue: Prompt Creative Centre.
“We had such a blast doing Extra Curricular in 2023. We loved celebrating teachers and seeing them let their hair down,” Libby says. “This show is comedy chaos that pokes fun at the profession, featuring music that will get you dancing and singing. But mainly, it unpacks the evidence that I was a terrible teacher who used the classroom as a stage for my underdeveloped stand-up comedy.”
Covering everything from parent teacher interviews to staffroom politics, sports days to PD sessions, nothing is off limits and everything is delivered with a healthy dose of humour and appreciation for our unsung heroes.
With original songs written by Libby and Matt accompanied by The Staff Band (Dylby McCullough and Tina Donaldson), Extra Curricular is a fast paced, ridiculous romp disguised as a professional development session.
